The Aberdare Range is a 160 km long mountain range of upland, north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi with an average elevation of 3,500 metres.

The Aberdare National Park, with an area of 767 Km2 covers the higher areas of the Aberdare Mountain Ranges of Central Kenya, from altitude of 1829M to 4001M above sea level. The topography is quite diverse with deep ravines that cut through the forested eastern and western slopes. Animals easily observed in the park include: the Black Rhino, leopard, baboon, black and white Colobus monkey and Sykes monkey. Rarer sightings include those of lions, the golden cat and the bongo- an elusive forest antelope that lives in the bamboo forest. Animals like the eland and spotted and melanistic serval cats can be found higher up in the moorlands.

Visitors can also indulge in picnics, trout fishing in the rivers and camping in the moorlands. Bird viewing is rewarding, with over 250 species of birds in the park, including the Jackson’s Francolin, sparry hawk, goshawks, eagles, sunbirds and plovers.

Equipment required by the client is minimal. – Stout walking shoes, socks. T shirt and shorts, long pants and long-sleeved shirt, warm jumper and waterproof jacket, bush hat and toothbrush being about all. Please do not bring any scented cosmetics. We provide sleeping mat, bag and tent. All food, and cooking equipment and of course our Hiking professional guide.

SAFARI PROGRAM

Arrival
You will be collected from the airport or hotel. Accommodation before the tour departs can be arranged for extra cost.

Day 1: Nairobi to Aberdares Reedbuck Campsite
You will leave Nairobi in the morning by private transport to Nyeri town where a jeep will take you to Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters. After Registration, you will enter the park through treetops gate. You will have a game drive en route to the Readback Camp Site.

You will then spend the afternoon accompanied by an armed ranger as you visit the Karuru and Magura waterfalls, which is just four hours walking round trip to the waterfalls. Dinner and overnight in tents at the Reedbuck camp.

Day 2: Aberdare Reedbuck campsite to Honi River campsite
Break camp after breakfast and then proceed to trek through the moorland as you visit the Queens cave waterfalls and Chania waterfalls on the way. Be in awe with the amazing views. You’ll be viewing high altitude plant life. Elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, Elland water backs, Reedbucks, and various bird species can be encountered as you proceed towards Honi River campsite.

This is a long day walking for 18 kilometers, picnic lunch will be served on the way. Later, you will camp at the Honi campsite for dinner and overnight (the journey is around six to seven hours).

Day 3: Honi River Campsite to Wanderis Roadhead Campsite
Break camp, breakfast, and start to hike through the Hagenia Forest to Wanderis Roadhead Campsite for lunch. Later, in the afternoon you will visit the waterholes and the Campsite Environs. Later in the evening, you will have dinner and overnight (approximately four hours) as you prepare for the summit hike early in the morning of the next day.

Day 4: Wanderis Roadhead Campsite to Satima Peak and to Park Gate
Wake up at 5:30 a.m. After a cup of coffee and biscuits, you will start the hike to the top of Satima Peak, 4001 meters, which is the highest point in the Aberdares overlooking the Great Rift Valley to the west and to the east, Mount Kenya. After reaching the summit, you will descend to the campsite for breakfast or lunch (the whole journey will take approximately five hours).

Walk down through the winding road, Giant Baboo tree majestically manning it, occasionally buffalos will be seen crossing the road. You will exit off the mountain via Wanderis Gate and camp there for the night.

Day 5: Wandare Park gate to Nairobi
You will break camp early after breakfast. Later, a private transport will transfer you to Nairobi or the Airport. You will arrive in Nairobi by lunch hour.

Accommodation: End of tour (no accommodation)
Meals and drinks: Breakfast is included.

Additional accommodation can be arranged for extra cost. You will be dropped off at the airport or hotel.

Accommodation
During the hiking safari, you will be camping at the Aberdare National Park, Satima Peak and Wandare Gate, Kenya.

The Aberdare National Park in the central highlands of Kenya retains an air of mystery – you can only imagine what undiscovered creatures still lurk here, such as rare Black Leopards.The Aberdares are an isolated volcanic range that forms the eastern wall of the rift valley, running about 100 Km north south between Nairobi and Thompsons Falls. This beautifully scenic region is much cooler than the savannahs and offers a completely different perspective on the country. The national park lies mainly above the tree line. The scenery is spectacular with its mountainous terrain covered in thick tropical forests swathed in mist.

Itinerary

Departing our office in the morning. We go north to Mweiga to meet our guide and then up into the forested eastern slopes of the Aberdare ranges where we make camp.

We start our walk. Carry only what you need for the day's walk, the vehicle will meet us in the moorlands where camp will be made. A short game drives if weather permits.

Day 4 :
Nairobi

We depart the moorland camp (10,000ft) and descend by vehicle looking for game on the way. We drop off the guide and head back to Nairobi arriving before late afternoon.Note: Clients should arrange to have good weatherproof clothing and a warm sleeping bag, a water bottle and good walking shoes plus a pair of shoes to wear in camp.
