4-day trek on Mt. Kenya via the Sirimon route, often combined with a Naro Moru descent, offers a scenic and physically challenging hike to Point Lenana (4,985m).

The itinerary typically includes hiking through forest and moorland to Old Moses Camp, advancing to Shipton’s Camp for the night, a sunrise summit attempt.

On Day 3, and descending via the steep Naro Moru route on Day 4.

Naro Moru Route Summary

The most popular route in Mount Kenya National Park although not the most scenic which approaches from the west. NaroMoru route is also the fastest route to the trekking peak at Point Lenana.

Take this classic route up Mount Kenya through the notoriously treacherous vertical bog and into the wide Teleki Valley beneath the Tryndall, The Lewis Glacier.

Though the summit can be reached in 4 days hiking as per the below itinerary, we strongly recommend an overnight acclimatization at the base, probably at Naro Moru River Lodge.

This can be arranged for at an extra fee.

This is one of the most popular hiking trails located near Naro Moru Town on the slopes of Mount Kenya.

The route offers trekkers with the chance to see wildlife.

Trekking the trail is graded as moderately difficult.

Climbing on this trail primarily offers opportunity for hiking past vertical bog (muddy bog) and backpacking.

On this route, there is a recently constructed paved road all the way to the Met Station Camp.

From the camp, you hike up to the summit at Lenana Peak or just Point Lenana at 4985m – the highest hiking peak without climbing experience.

An early morning start scrambling through rocky scree getting to the summit in time to catch sunrise over the African skies.

4 Days Mt Kenya Climb Naro-Moru Sirimon Route

4-Day hiking itinerary:

Day 1: Nairobi/Meteorological Station 3-4 hrs, 10km, 400m ascent

An early morning departure from Nairobi at 8am. Transfer to Mount Kenya National Park at Naro Moru Gate for registration and where the hike starts, 2600m.

From the gate, keep to the park track, which follows the crest of a board ridge between the Northern and Southern Naro Moru valleys.

The going is easy and it’s a pleasant walking through the forest.

About two thirds of the way up after the bridge there are good views to the left north down into the Northern Naro Moru valley.

The trek ends at Met station 3,000m where dinner and overnight rest will be, L, D.

4 Days Mt Kenya Climb Naro-Moru – Sirimon Route

Day 2: Met Station/Mackinders Camp 5-6 hrs, 10km, 1200m ascent

Take an early morning breakfast. Head uphill on the track to pass the radio must on your right after about half an hour.

The trek runs into a path and after another 30 minutes, you will reach the end of the forest belt and enter the moorland.

This is the vertical bog conditions range from damp to glutinous depending on when it last rained. Continue through until the going improves and you reach a fork overlooking Teleki Valley to reach Mackinders Camp, 4,200m.

Dinner and overnight at Mackinders Camp, B, L, D.

Day 3: Mackinders Camp/Point Lenana/Met Station, 8-10 hrs, 11km, 785m ascent

The normal approach is to start an early morning at 2 am in order to reach point Lenana taking about 4 hr walk by sunrise at 6:30am.

After sunrise, descend down to Mackinders Camp for breakfast, 2hrs and walk further 4hrs, way back to Met Station for dinner and overnight, B, L, D.

4 Days Naro-Moru Sirimon

Day 4: Met Station/Naro Moru/Nairobi 3hrs, 9km, 400m

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest which is 9km to Mount Kenya National Park’s Naro Moru Gate at 2,600m.

Here, you will connect with your transport back to Nairobi arriving at approximately 3pm, B, L.

Overview

The 4-day Mt. Kenya trek via the Sirimon Route (Ascent) and Naro Moru Route (Descent) provides a fantastic cross mountain traverse. You will experience diverse climate zones, excellent acclimatization, and a predawn summit of Point Lenana (4,985m), followed by a quick descent. 
Day 1: Nairobi to Judmier Camp (Old Moses)
  • The Trek: Drive from Nairobi to the Sirimon Gate (roughly 4 hours). Hike for 3 hours (9km) through lush montane forest and heather zones to reach the camp at 3,300m.
  • Elevation Gain: 680m. 
Day 2: Judmier Camp to Shipton’s Camp
  • The Trek: Ascend through the Ontulili River valley and moorlands to Mackinder’s Valley. The 14km hike takes about 5–6 hours and offers great acclimatization up to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m).
  • Elevation Gain: 900m. 
Day 3: Shipton’s Camp to Point Lenana & Down to Met Station
  • The Trek: Begin the summit push at 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM, trekking 3 hours across scree and rock to reach Point Lenana (4,985m) in time to watch the sunrise. Afterward, descend the steep, scenic Naro Moru route past Mackinder’s Camp to spend the night at the Met Station (3,000m).
  • Elevation Gain: 785m ascent | Descent: 1,985m. 
Day 4: Met Station to Nairobi
  • The Trek: Enjoy a 3-hour (9km) descent through the dense equatorial rainforest to the Naro Moru Park Gate. Meet your transport and head back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
  • Elevation Loss: 400m.
